Learning by explaining with ScreenChomp

I went looking for an on-screen whiteboard app after seeing the amazing Kahn Academy instructional videos. ScreenChomp by TechSmith (Camtasia etc) is an elegant minimalist free app for all ages. It takes just a few minutes to learn what it does, and an instructor or student can get to work drawing on the screen and recording a voice message to explain.

It is so easy to use that teachers and students can use it to explain and explore on-the-go, sending quick help videos to others. This is surely a very good way to demonstrate learning, and explain concepts.
One can quickly do a screen capture, then insert this image into ScreenChomp and use the pen and voice to create an explanation, pose questions or complete an exercise.

There is no registration for the online space, and presumably there is a limit on storage. I suspect that there will be a fee in a while for extra storage and other features.

  1. Thanks for this. Sounds interesting. Will download and have a go.

  2. But are you over 17, Michael? That is the bizarre warning on apps that use the internet. Same on browser apps, so apparently no one under 17 can access the internet. You're safe.

  3. John, this is brilliant!
Once again we are on parallel paths. Inspired by the Khan Academy, the Exec Dean here at UofA Sciences faculty is keen to promote this style of instruction.

While screen chomp looks great at what it does and has a good pedigree - we are also looking for higher resolution / fidelity approaches for those nasty long physics equations. Do you or your readers have any suggestions (perhaps pen/stylus based, maybe even incorporating external (wacom) tablets...)

    Open to any/all suggestions

  4. OK - so you have totally disrupted my morning. I have made my first ScreenChomp and shared it liberally. Now the kicker - how could I repeat this process in private and end up with a movie file on my computer?

A quick google doesn't give me any clues - is there a paid/corporate version??? A competing app that allows less public screencasting???

  5. Mike (Fang) Explain Everything might be what you need. I'll be doing a review of this soon. It is a much more sophisticated version of ScreenChomp. It can send projects to photo roll, email, dropbox, evernote. But don't look until I have done my post!
